What is CRI?

CRI tells you how faithfully a light source shows colour. It matters more than most people expect.

The idea

CRI is the colour rendering index, a score out of 100 for how accurately a light shows colours compared with a reference source. Under a low CRI light, reds turn dull, skin looks flat and fabrics lose depth.

What the numbers mean

CRI 70 is acceptable for roads, yards and other places where you only need to see. CRI 80 is the standard for homes, offices and shops, and it is what most of the LiteArt range delivers.

CRI 90 and above is worth asking about for art, fashion, food display and make-up areas, where colour accuracy is the point.

CRI and colour temperature are different things

Colour temperature is the colour of the light itself. CRI is how well that light shows the colours of objects. You can have a warm 3000K light with good or poor CRI, so check both.

A quick test

Hold your hand, a piece of fruit or a fabric sample under the light. If it looks grey, greenish or lifeless compared with daylight, the CRI is low.
